Rwanda Volleyball Clubs Mandated to Launch Youth Academies Before 2025/26 Season

The Rwanda Volleyball Federation (FRVB) has officially directed all domestic volleyball clubs to set up youth academies ahead of the upcoming 2025/26 season, which kicks off in October 2025.

The announcement follows a resolution made during the FRVB General Assembly held in April in Kigali, where member clubs unanimously agreed to adopt new regulations emphasizing youth development as a top priority.

According to FRVB president Raphael Ngarambe, this policy is a strategic step to strengthen local talent pipelines and minimize the national league’s reliance on foreign players.

“As volleyball continues to grow among popular sports in Rwanda, we aim to develop strong youth talent programs that support national teams at all levels,” Ngarambe said.

Police Volleyball Club became the first team to meet the new standard, officially launching its youth academy at Lycée de Kigali (LDK) in Rugunga on June 26, 2025. The FRVB has called on the remaining clubs to follow suit, with a compliance deadline set for August 15, 2025.

Each first-division club — in both the men's and women’s leagues — is now required to run an academy targeting youth aged 12 to 16. These academies must also provide all essential equipment, including volleyballs, nets, and training kits, to ensure a solid foundation for young athletes.

Existing Centers of Excellence

Beyond club academies, Rwanda already hosts six volleyball development centers in schools across the country. These include:

  • Groupe Scolaire Saint Aloys Rwamagana (Girls)

  • Collège Christ-Roi (Boys)

  • Groupe Saint Joseph

  • Groupe Scolaire Officiel de Butare

  • Petit Séminaire Virgo Fidelis

These centers have been pivotal in promoting volleyball at the grassroots level and now complement the FRVB’s broader push for institutionalized youth training within professional clubs.

The initiative is expected to elevate Rwanda’s volleyball talent pool, making the national teams more self-reliant while preparing the next generation of athletes for regional and international competitions.
