Liverpool to Retire Diogo Jota’s No.20 Shirt in Emotional Tribute After Tragic Passing

Description:

Liverpool Football Club has officially announced that Diogo Jota’s iconic number 20 jersey will be permanently retired across all teams — including the men’s, women’s, and academy squads — as a tribute to the late Portuguese forward.

The heartbreaking decision follows the tragic car accident in northwestern Spain that claimed the lives of Jota and his brother, André Silva, last Thursday. The two were laid to rest over the weekend in their hometown of Gondomar, Portugal.

Since joining Liverpool from Wolves in 2020, Jota quickly became a vital part of the squad, contributing to several key victories, including helping the Reds clinch their historic 20th league title last season — a symbolic achievement matching the number on his jersey.

A club statement read:

"In consultation with his wife, Rute, and family, Liverpool FC will retire the number 20 shirt in Diogo’s honor. This includes all levels of the club, from LFC Women to the Academy.

This gesture reflects not only Diogo’s exceptional contributions on the pitch but also the deep and lasting relationships he built with teammates, staff, and supporters."
